OPINION: “Do or do not, there is no try”

Yes, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice.

I’ve always had a very strong sense of patriotism. In high school, I won several speech-writing competitions showcasing this patriotism. I love this country and I truly believe that this country has all the workings and potential to be a leader in this world from our infrastructure to our governing processes to our educational institutions. I believe we could be the greatest country in the world if we tried.

As an adult, I’m still a patriot but I’m continuously frustrated with the direction our country is taking regarding civil rights, humanitarian issues, immigration, global warming, free speech, and violence. I’m devastated that we aren’t reaching our potential with regard to our infrastructure, governing processes, and educational institutions. I’m pissed that China owns the majority of our debt and that our national deficit is over $800 trillion in 2018. Most recently, I’m extremely upset that, on our border, children are being taken away from their families and jailed without any plan in place to reunite them with their families.

When did we become a country that cared so little for the children of the world that we traumatize them and don’t even have the wherewithal to have a plan? These children belong with their families. Not only that, but the chatter online and debate about this is making me physically ill. You people out there who can’t see that this isn’t a political issue should be ashamed. What, these children don’t matter because they aren’t citizens? They don’t matter because they aren’t white? They don’t matter because you can’t see them? They don’t matter because we have fostered a culture where it’s acceptable for you to hide behind your screen and belittle, berate, and bully anyone and everyone? They don’t matter because you don’t care?

In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.

I created this blog to hopefully reach one person out there and help them care about what’s going on in the world. I just wanted to present the facts and all sides of the news so that there was a clear voice in the madness. I just want people to care even half as much as I seem to. But, it seems as though people only care about being right. They care about their point-of-view. They care about making others feel small.

Does the administration help? No. Does the media help? No. We have lost sight of our own patriotism and our empathy. We are facing a culture war and it’s what is infecting this country from within. Spreading hate, lies, misinformation, apathy, fear, aggression, and tension.

In this war, a danger there is, in losing who we are.

So, like always, I ask…

who cares?

I still do. I care so much that it pains me to read the comments on posts, to hear the nonsense being spouted online and in the media, and to have any respect for this administration. I am a patriot, and I care too much about this country and its people to be quiet and say nothing.

Do better, people. Do better.

  1. Have some compassion for your fellow man regardless of their national origin, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or ethnicity.
  2. Think before you speak.
  3. If you can’t say anything nice, walk away.
  4. If you witness racism, bias, sexism, or any other intolerance, DO SOMETHING!
  5. Be a confidant of someone struggling with mental health issues.
  6. Lead by example for your children and for other’s children.
  7. Be better.

You will know (the good from the bad) when you are calm, at peace.
