Political platforms change over time due to numerous factors including changes in culture, technology, social trends, religion, science, etc. These factors weigh heavily every four years when the RNC and DNC call in delegates from each state to establish the each party’s political platform.
Typically, over the last twenty years or so, Democrats have maintained a platform focused on social and economic equality with the government providing support to its citizens. Similarly, the Republican base has focused on free market capitalism, strong national defense, and deregulation. Democrats typically favor higher taxes which would pay for government programs, free college tuition, etc. Republicans favor lower taxes and less government interference in their lives and in business.
Additionally, Republicans, in general, have always had a tougher stance on crime and punishment. That being the case, I’ve been very confused over the last few weeks as the president has decided to issue more pardons.
For political reasons, most presidents wait until the end of their presidency to issue pardons. The public’s general opinion has never backed pardoning criminals and it’s not seen in a positive light even though it’s a very important power for the president to possess.
Trump’s presidency has been anything but typical, but that aside, issuing pardons in his second year in office seems dangerous and foolhardy even for this president.
So you’re probably asking yourself why any of this matters and
I believe that it matters because it’s another example of the degradation of the Republican party’s platform and concerns me about how in touch the president is with the Republican base.
So, of course, I have some questions.
- Do the new #MAGA voters out there truly believe these individuals have been wronged by the government?
- Does this once very strict on punishment and crime set of principles still apply in our new modern #MAGA society?
- Do any of these people truly deserve clemency?
- Why were these individuals pardoned without going through the typical process?
- Will these pardon’s have a negative effect on the president’s image to his supporters
The assertion that the government has wronged its citizens by imprisoning them is extremely dangerous and extremely atypical for anyone calling themselves a Republican.
If you’re reading this and you want this president to succeed and you support his presidency but you also believe in the Republican values, you need to really take a look at what he is doing and ask yourself why. Remember, there is nothing politically to gain by issuing pardons in this way or at this time.
