According to good ole Google, the definition of the “Deep State” is “a form of a cabal that coordinates efforts by government employees to influence state policy without regard for democratically elected leadership.”
So, why is it that members of Congress and other political figures are using this term as a catch-all for anything that they don’t like or that makes their party look bad?
Well, the naive answer to that question would be that they are just using trigger words to incite the base and they don’t mean anything by it. The more accurate answer is they are using propaganda to form the narrative that suits their political machinations.
Members of every political party use words and phrases to trigger an emotional response from those with similar views. The difference in those trigger words and phrases and referring to something as “fake news” or the “deep state” is that one is public relations spin and the other is propaganda.
So, let’s talk about propaganda and how it’s been used historically to spread false messages.
Propaganda is a political tool used to spread false narratives. It has been used historically by the Nazi Party during WWII to show a bright and shiny future of blond-haired blue-eyed citizens completely overlooking the thousands of Jews being rounded up and exterminated. Propaganda is a tool still used today in countries like Russia and North Korea attempting to brainwash citizens. What do these examples have in common? Dictators.
Calling the FBI the “Deep State” is propaganda targeted at individuals in this country. Most recently, Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) used the term to explain away the ridiculous purchase by Secretary of HUD, Ben Carson of a $31,000 dining set.
Now, you’re probably thinking, well that’s dumb and doesn’t make any sense and…
Well, clearly this is a ridiculous story and this congresswoman really needs to go find another profession, but I want you to care about this because it was so easy for her to lie. To outright lie and spread a false narrative.
This is where we are right now as a country. Regardless of party affiliation, we are existing in a country where our leaders will spread propaganda and lies. Additionally, they are using the mainstream media such as Fox News to do so. See Col. Ralph Peters’s Statement calling out Fox News for being a “Propaganda Machine”.
So, you’re thinking, well “I listen to NPR…IDGAF”
Here’s the deal, a lot of people in this country consume their news from sources known to spread propaganda like Fox News, NRATV, Breitbart News and other equally deceptive organizations. These individuals likely do not know they are being lied to and believe they are consuming conservative news that follows their conservative values. Unfortunately, this is how propaganda works and why it’s so dangerous.
I don’t care what your political opinions are, spreading lies is wrong and dangerous. “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15).
